The Guardian Football reports that Fenerbahce coach Ismail Kartal announced his resignation after Thursday’s 1-1 draw at home to Roma in the Champions League, before president Aziz Yildirim said he would remain in the job.
Kartal told reporters he was leaving “never to return” and said the decision was intended “to clear the way for the club”, according to the report. Yildirim then told reporters that Kartal “continues in his role” and said he had spoken to the coach about the pressure around the team.
The report says Kartal was upset after a bottle was thrown at him during the match. It adds that Fenerbahce’s remaining league-phase fixtures include trips to Aston Villa and a home game against Liverpool.
